Calatayud
Calatayud is a DO wine region in the southwest of the Aragon, northern Spain. The landscape in Calatayud is hilly and dotted with impressive architecture. The climate is continental, with extremely hot and dry summers. However, this effect is largely mitigated by the elevation of Calatayud's vineyards. Most vineyards sit on loose, rocky soils, with good drainage and a generous proportion of limestone. Yields are typically very low adding to the quality of the wines. Calatayud is known for its big and bold red wines, mainly made from Garnacha grapes. Tempranillo and Carignan are the other main red varieties, while the region's fresh crisp whites are based on Viura (Macabeo), Malvasia and Chardonnay. Garnacha-based rosé wines (rosado) are also common.
